Overview

The RSTAR Affinity Data Logger is a digital multi-sensor node designed to connect a wide range of analog and digital instruments to the RSTAR Affinity web-based environment for data management, transmission, and verification. Each unit can be configured to support up to five instruments of different types, delivering modularity, scalability, and flexibility for geotechnical and structural monitoring projects.

Instrument and logger configuration is handled through authenticated Bluetooth Low Energy using the RSTAR Affinity Field Utility mobile app. Once configured, the logger communicates readings over an LPWAN network through the RSTAR Affinity Gateway, with LoRaWAN support for long-range outdoor applications of up to 15 km depending on antenna and frequency.

Role in remote monitoring

In Orica's wireless automated remote deformation monitoring workflow, pairing ShapeArray with RSTAR Affinity helps automate the data chain from the sensing point to the visualization platform. In that setup, the Data Logger periodically acquires deformation data, sends it wirelessly to the gateway, and the gateway forwards it to central IT or cloud infrastructure for storage, analysis, and proactive risk management.

This approach suits slope monitoring, dams, tunnels, walls, buildings, and other assets where early movement detection and near real-time visibility are critical.

Operational benefits

  • Five configurable modules for specific instrumentation signal types.
  • Compartmentalized design to simplify maintenance.
  • Self-locating through Bluetooth for easier field setup.
  • Industrial IP67 protection and wide operating temperature range.
  • Standalone logging with authenticated local download when cellular coverage is limited.
  • CSV export for rapid field verification.

Applications

The logger is intended for civil infrastructure, energy, surface mining, underground mining, and broader geotechnical instrumentation deployments that require reliable telemetry and integration with vibrating wire sensors, thermistors, RS-485 devices, and ShapeArray-based systems.
