The hard Teflon gasketing protects against excessive compression of the Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA), and hence greater sealing pressures can be achieved.  Teflon is one of the best known insulators and is chemically inert; the operating temperature ranges from -350ºF up to +550ºF and is FDA approved.
